Overenthusiastic multiple posting but meh.

Bach - Air on a G String (stop sniggering at the back)

Our head of music at Uni once got hold of a copy of Sweetbox's Everything's Gonna Be Alright which featured this as its main accompaniment. We had to perform the Air and the rap at the same time to prove how rap could be made more accessible - and how tricky rap can be. She arranged the whole thing for us and we just took one afternoon out with a part written for each of us. We went off and did a quick study (a few minutes to get acquainted) and then came back and played it.

She wrote me a drumkit part! For Air on a G String! Bless her!

Why did we *not* record that? Dang!

EDIT: Now playing Rachmaninov's Paganini Rhapsody, var. 18.

Which one? LOL ^_^

1. Playing the triangle in a joint schools primary orchestra when I was 9?
2. The end of my beater flying off during a moving performance of Memory from Cats?
3. Having no cymbal stands and having to up-end a load of chairs to hang up my instruments?
4. Dashing from one end of the room to the other during Finlandia and almost breaking my neck on a cello?
5. Performing the whole of my part for The Radetsky March at half speed because my conductor couldn't be arsed spending any time with the percussion section?
6. Trying not to laugh at my increasingly pretentious conductor while he took us through his self-penned piano concerto (which he couldn't play)?
7. Trying not to laugh while we accompanied a guy in actual lederhosen singing Eidelweiss?
8. Making up my part during The Liberty Bell because at the time I couldn't read music?

Or...

... do you mean from when I've conducted them myself? lol!

ouchy, sounds painful and i know how dangerous they can be, always remember my old school yard crush lugging one them around, i would always give my seat to her on the bus, but she only used it for the cello

(come to think of it i always fall for the musical type )

laura- cello
Emily- bassoon

my ex joy was a good singer

the list goes on Embarassed

May sound strange but take a look in Private Eye magazine - they sometimes run an ad for online / CD sax tuition & hire. Worth a try?

might try that, just worried that i may find the sax heavy and awkward to use with my left hand, how heavy do saxophones tend to be ?

Alto sax? Hmm... not too heavy, really (the average 9-year-old can handle it with few problems), but most saxophonists would use a neck strap to help support it while they play. Some even go for a harness to support it.

If you're worried about your arm, most of the movement is in fingers and wrist, I think - your arm would be in pretty much the same position while you play, only slight movements, really, as the keys pick up some the slack when you change pitches.

Will ask an expert for more info for you. Smile

Ok, I spoke to one of our woodwind teachers who said pretty much the same as I did earlier. The secret's in the sling you use. Get a good neckstrap or harness and you won't have to support any weight at all. He also says the movement is all in your wrist and finger joints so it wouldn't cause too much trouble for the rest of your arm.

Anyone see it last night?

I wonder what was going on with the cutting-to-Clive-Anderson-in-the-studio sections? Half the time he wasn't even paying attention and at one point I saw him sit staring for a second until he realised he was on air and then he turned on the studio charm. And I wanted him to straighten his tie. That was so annoying.

Thought the conductor was quite good but brave to move away from the Fantasia on Sea Shanties. One or two Prommers looked a bit cheated (they'd brought their bicycle horns specially and everything). Apparently the Sea Songs piece played as an alternative was performed in remembrance of 50 years since Vaughan Williams' death.

I never saw the Maestro series but Sue Perkins didn't do too badly. She had Lesley Garrett with her, which was great (she's a really good sport, I think - there'd have been some sopranos who would have balked at the idea of working with an amateur conductor - make Lesley a dame). I think her orchestra must have been quite a supportive bunch, too.

Pianist French pianist + orchestra = fab!

Stares reproachfully French pianist + The Mighty Bryn = hmmm. Interesting... very loud.
